An easy to navigate Website doesn’t seem to be a concept that is understood well enough with small business owners or by a lot of people in general. I spend a lot of time going to company Websites and looking for their blog link or their contact information. Unless you are going crazy to design an online graphics portfolio, then keep it simple. But even in designing a graphics portfolio; people still need a clear way to navigate through your material.
I ran into a blog which posted about Girls With Guns Clothing (GWG). I was impressed with the simplicity of the Website as well as the projection of the company’s image. Needless to say, (or I wish it was needless to say), is your Website will become the very thing people place under their “Microscope.” Your company’s Website or your personal Website is what will determine whether or not people buy your product or “buy you.” If your site isn’t easy to navigate or doesn’t have a clear image that represents who you are; then people will be hitting the back button on their browser in a few seconds. A Website shows your professional capabilities to your audience or potential customers.
If you are a small business owner. I highly recommend you take a look at this site. Take a look at the lay out of their products, and see how simplistic their layout is and compare it to your own. Don’t sit there all prideful and believe your Website doesn’t need to be tweaked. I’m a designer, and I’ am continually planning other ways to make my professional capabilities appear better under the “Microscope.” You should too, unless you’d like to be part of the small business statistic that about 70% of all small business fail within the first 5 years. Don’t fall into the prideful trap that you don’t need to market or “show off” your business. Your Website is an employee of your company and will be working for you 24/7. In most cases, think of it as the backbone of your company; and if you can improve your posture, customers and potential customers will take notice.
